September is National Organic Month!

One of the most recent trends in the food industry is the use of the word “organic.” Suddenly (or so it seems) almost everything is being labeled “organic;” ketchup, grapes, meats, and so much more are all getting this extra adjective thrown before their name.

But, is there more to organic foods than just a buzzword that increases sales? Does eating organically actually make a difference? Advocates say that it does; they argue that it is safer, more nutritious and sometimes even better tasting than the non-organic food counterparts. And they might be onto something. In honor of September being “National Organic Month,” here are some of the most convincing reasons to “go organic:”

  • Organic products, like meat or milk, actually have 50% more omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally produced products. Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of unsaturated healthy fat that helps with lowering risks like heart disease, depression, dementia, and arthritis. Our bodies cannot make these, which is why you need to eat them or take supplements.
  • As mentioned earlier, organic foods are safer to eat. Why? Fruits, vegetables, and grains labeled “organic” are grown without the use of most synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Fewer chemicals = better for you.
  • Organic meat products are free of antibiotics and synthetic hormones. So this means your beef, pork, and chicken are free of the gross hormones that cause them to grow much bigger much faster. In fact, these “gross” synthetic hormones have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
  • Organic food is often fresher. Due to the fact that organic food does not contain preservatives (which help food stay good longer), organic produce needs to be sold immediately.
  • Organic farming is better for the environment. Reduction of pollution, conservation of water, reduction of soil erosion, increased soil fertility and less energy usage are all positives that come from organic farming.

Of course, like anything, maintaining an organic diet comes with its challenges. One of the most notable drawbacks of organic eating is the price. Here are some ideas on how to make eating organic more affordable: https://foodbabe.com/how-to-eat-organic-on-a-budget

Now that you know some of the many benefits of eating organic, we hope you try to incorporate more organic healthy choices in your meals!
